- By Tijjani Ibrahim

Kano state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engineer Mua’zu Magaji, has said the state fire service is ready to respond to any fire incidence during harmattan season.

The commissioner stated this on Monday at the state headquarters of the fire service where he inspected facilities at the command.

The visit was informed by media report concerning the state of firefighting equipment and facilities amid rising fire incidences across the country.

“We are concerned because we have seen reports in some media that a lot of issues have been raised regarding the readiness of a lot of our fire departments to respond to emergencies. From what I have seen, Kano state is sufficiently ready, in spite of the fact that they need more support, and we will do our best to give all the necessary support they need to ensure that they can effectively discharge their responsibility,” he said.

He said four new fire trucks had been approved in the 2020 budget to strengthen the fire department in discharging its duties, adding that the maintenance initiative by director of the service would complement the budgetary constraint.

In his response, the Director Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sagir Madaki, said the state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, had approved the refurbishing of 25 fire trucks used in some rural fire fighting stations.

He called on residents of the state to always alert the department in time for swift action in order to minimize fire destructions.
