Enugu LG chairmen advised to execute projects to outlive them

The 17 Local Government Area Chairmen in Enugu State have been advised to embark on capital projects that would outlive them.

Newly sworn-in Commission­er for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Peter Okonkwo, who gave the advice when the chairmen visited him in his office. He said the ministry was poised to re-focus the primary assignment of the local council administra­tion in the state to make it more formidable and impactful on the lives of the rural dwellers.

According to Okonkwo, the ministry is focused on making sure that every council area in the state actualized concrete developmen­t projects that would stand the test of time.

The commission­er further said the local government system would pay more attention to primary healthcare delivery to ensure that the lofty visions of the state government in the health sector, such as the Universal Health Coverage, are fully actualized.

Okonkwo said: “Our principal agenda is to create a stronger synergy so that there will be a more effective relationsh­ip between the state and the local government­s. We will engage them in partnershi­p arrangemen­t. The focal point of this administra­tion is grassroots-based.

“The state government will leverage on its firm commitment to the provision of infrastruc­ture in the rural communitie­s as well as general well-being of the dwellers, to create synergy and ensure that the activities of the local government­s are re-positioned for utmost positive impact on the people.”
