Woman allegedly poisons 2-dayold granddaughter in Ogun
The police in Ogun State have arrested a 42-year-old woman, Mrs Temitope Akinola, for allegedly killing her two-dayold granddaughter with a poisonous substance.
The suspect, who resides at Isote area of Sagamu, was arrested following a report at the Sagamu police division.
It was reported that the suspect was the only person with the child while the baby's mother went to take her bath, only for her to return and meet the lifeless body of the baby.
The suspect had allegedly never hidden her hatred for her son-in-law, the baby's father.
A statement by the police spokesperson in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Sunday said upon receipt of the report, the DPO Sagamu division, Okiki Agunbiade, detailed detectives to the scene where the grandmother was arrested.
According to the statement, the suspect, when interrogated, admitted killing the baby because she was not “pleased with her daughter for marrying the baby's father.”
The statement further quoted her to have said that when she discovered that her daughter was pregnant, she made an attempt to terminate the pregnancy "but her pastor warned her not to do so hence she waited for her to deliver before carrying out the act."
"She explained further that she poisoned the baby with a deadly insecticide known as Sniper", the statement said.
Oyeyemi said the corpse of the baby had been deposited at the morgue of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, for autopsy, while the suspect has been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.
