- From Jeremiah Oke, Ibadan

The Federal Government on Sunday revealed that no fewer than 19,273 teachers failed the Professional Qualification Examination (PQE) organised by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to ascertain numbers of qualified teachers in the country.

The Registrar/Chief Executive officer of the council (TRCN), Professor Segun Ajiboye who disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Ibadan yesterday, said 53,674 candidates however passed the screening.

Breakdown of the results signed by the Registrar revealed that 72,947 wrote the examinations in various centers across the country out of which 19,273 failed.

Professor Ajiboye appreciated the commitment of Nigerian teachers to excellent delivery in spite of the challenges they face, coupled with the support given to TRCN to reposition the teaching profession in the country.

According to him, Lagos State topped the list of those who registered for the examination with 8,224 while total of 6,067 have passed. Oyo State has about 5,59 registered while only 4,243 passed, followed by Kaduna with 3,769 recording pass grades out of 4,008 who registered for the examination.

Hr urged teachers not to relent in taking the professional examinations, saying ““PQE is a continuous thing and the door is still open to those who have not registered to do so. And those who failed the examination still have opportunities of retaking the exam.”
