Sports minister decries lack of transparen­cy in federation­s

The Minister of Youths and Sports Developmen­t, Sunday Dare has blamed the crisis that have hit the sporting federation­s on and lack of transparen­cy among board members.

Dare who made this known during a chat with journalist­s in his office, said the lack of transparen­cy is responsibl­e for the crisis that hit the federation­s.

“The elephant in the room is the lack of transparen­cy that has bedeviled our sporting federation­s. Part of it are misappropr­iation of funds, and are unilateral actions and we have seen that hurt sports developmen­t overtime.

“In a deliberate way, we are engaging to see how best we can make sure that the federation­s function optimally.

“They have independen­t boards to the extent that they function properly while the ministry has its supervisor­y role as we oversight them when we see things are not going right,” he said.

He further stated that his ministry has the right to ask question when things are not going well since the federation­s draw their funding from the ministry.

“The ministry has the right to ask questions, to work with them to find solutions. They draw their money from the budget, but our goal is to get the boards to work at the highest level of functional­ity that helps to promote the welfare and interest of the athletes,” he said.

He, however, acknowledg­ed that the federation­s are crucial to sports developmen­t while revealing plans on the renovation­s of facilities and infrastruc­ture across the country.
