Bauchi College of Nursing to begin community midwifery course for married women

- By Hassan Ibrahim, Bauchi

Bauchi State College of Nursing and Midwifery would commence a twoyear Community Midwifery Program that will strengthen primary health care services in the state.

The programme is also aimed to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity caused by the shortage of midwives in the villages and towns across the state.

The Provost of the College, Hajiya Rakiya Saleh, who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in Bauchi, said the development would also reduce financial burden on the government and give opportunities to married women and other young girls to bridge the gap of inadequate manpower in the healthcare sector in local government areas.

According to her, when the college graduated its pioneer set of students, the state will have an increased number of indigenous nurses, midwives and community midwives who will join other health workers serving in various health facilities in the state.

The Provost attributed the successes recorded in the college to the quick interventions of the state governor and the high level commitment towards addressing the acute shortage of health manpower,

“Our mission is to be a leading training institution that commits to engaging its staff and students in teaching, learning and research to produce competent nurses and midwives that will deliver quality services in line with global initiative.”

She noted that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has granted full accreditation to courses being run in the college.
