Police arrest soldier over alleged killing of shoe seller

The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of army personnel that allegedly killed a shoe seller in Kaduna.

The Command’s spokesman DSP Yakubu Sabo confirmed the incident to Daily Trust and said the soldier has been placed in police custody.

Sabo said the suspect was unconsciou­s before the police took him to hospital, while his other accomplice­s were at large.

“The police took him to hospital because he was unconsciou­s. So he is presently under police custody while our men are after the remaining three of his friends,”

Earlier, Daily Trust reported that there was confusion at Shaikh Gumi Central Market when an alleged solder who allegedly stabbed a shoe seller was also seriously injured by angry youths in the market.

Eyewitness­es told Daily Trust at the scene of the incident that the alleged soldier, who was in mufti took the action after an argument with the victim.

It was not clear what led to the argument between the two but the incident happened around 2:30pm at the Royal Section of the central market.

The victim was identified as Yusuf who resided at unguwar Sunusi a suburb of the state metropolis.

An eye witness, who simply identified himself as Salis, said the suspect, who claimed to be a soldier was rescued by vigilantes before the arrival of the police.

“It was a soldier that stabbed and killed a shoe seller on the chest with a knife after an argument and other youths around also attacked and seriously injured the soldier on the head before he was rescued,” he said.

Our reporter who went to the scene reported that the arrival of the police and soldiers created fear in the market as shop owners closed their shops and left for home.
