FCT, auto association to host National Grand Prix
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is working with the Nigeria Auto Sport Association (NASA) to host a National Grand Prix in Abuja by April.
Already, our reporter observed that track inspection and road mapping have commenced ahead of the car race competition.
Speaking during the track inspection, a co-founder of NASA, Adekola Olamilekan, said the event is driven by “our passion for auto sport and also to put Nigeria on the international map as one of the country that embraces auto sport.”
He also stated that the event can also help in the country’s economy diversification drive as it can boost the tourism sector.
Olamilekan said, “The essence of this inspection is to present the track layout to the transport secretariat and other relevant bodies for approval, after which we would hold a collective stakeholders meeting for finalisation.”
The FCT Director for Sports, Dilichukwu Onyedima, said the essence of the event is to showcase
FCT as a city that is conducive for any sporting activity both local and international.
“Auto sport is not a small event, it is done in popular cities across the world, so we decided to bring it to the FCT because it is popular and has an enabling environment for any sporting activity, and that’s why we came up with the idea to showcase our tourism and what we have in FCT,” Onyedima said.
President of the Federation of the Tourism Association of Nigeria (FTAN), Saleh Rabor, in his remarks said, “We are here to see for ourselves the intended track layout presented by NASA and make necessary adjustments if need be.”
Rabor added that the event will have positive multiplier effects on the FCT economy and that of Nigeria at large.
