Korea will keep working hand in hand with Nigeria to improve education
The Republic of Korea has said that it donated a $15 millionworth multimedia learning centre to improve children’s access to quality education in Nigeria.
Situated in Piwoyi Community in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria-Korea Model School (NKMS) is a multimedia, state-of-the-art teaching and learning centre for basic education in Nigeria.
It was constructed by the Korean Government in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Lee In-Tae (Rtd. Maj. Gen.) noted that education is one of the most important factors in Nigeria’s pursuit to grow up as one of the largest economies by the year 2020.
He, however, said given the current state of education in Nigeria, strong measures still needs to be taken to renovate the system in order for it to serve as a reliable and efficient vehicle for the attainment of the vision.
The envoy explained that the multimedia learning centre was established to support Nigeria’s effort in providing quality education in public primary and secondary schools.
“We are all aware of the fact that education provides the most sustainable means to reach the national growth objectives based on the establishment of strong state institutions and a healthy economy, which are all designed to ensure that people have the best quality of life,” the Ambassador said at the opening of the Local Training for FCT Public School Teachers at the Nigeria-Korea Model School.
He assured that Korea would not hesitate to continue sharing experiences and assisting Nigeria in strengthening the educational sector and national capacity.
Lee said, “In Korea, best education often means a sacrifice for parents, because education of children means a family project due to its long-standing emphasis on parental responsibility on education itself.
“Nevertheless, Korea’s experience of success in many ways of education, including realizing the sustainable multimedia education environment in the general classroom level at schools for basic education, will have much significance working towards developing model universal basic education in Nigeria.
“I hope the Nigeria-Korea Model School will contribute to the improvement of the current education environment of public schools in Nigeria, strengthen the education capacity and enhance the efficient operation and management of public schools to meet in line with Nigeria’s educational vision which seeks to re-focus the country’s educational system.”
