Power outage looms as fire guts parts of Kano transmission station

Fire incident yesterday gutted parts of DanAgundi Transmission station in Kano.

The fire which started around 11am burnt one of the transformers of the station before it was later put off by the operatives of Fire Service.

“When the incidence started, the staff working in the station quickly switched off all the machines here and later called the Fire Service personnel who later came like 15 minutes later and succeeded in putting it off”, an eye witness confirmed to Daily Trust.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incidence adding that the fire has affected only one transformer in the station.

The spokesperson of the agency, CFO Sa’id Muhammd Ibrahim, said the affected transformer is like a feeder that feeds other areas of the city.

“Operatives got to the station around 11am and were able to put off the fire that gutted a 15MVA transformer. We are currently investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of damages it has done’’, he said.

Meanwhile, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) said in spite of the outbreak, there is no cause for alarm as it has put all the necessary steps to address the challenge.

KEDCO’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Sani Shawai told Daily Trust that, “One of KEDCO power transformers, 15MVA TR1 was observed in flames and at the same time the transformer tripped on over current all phases affecting three feeders’’.

As a result of the incidence, KEDCO said residents of Kofar Na’isa, Kofar Nasarawa, Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Kano city, Yan Kifi small scale by Zoo Road as well as Gandun Albasa areas of the city will face power outage pending when the transformer will be replaced.
