A 21-year-old man, Ola Sunday, and a 60-year-old great-grandmother, Deborah Ajisegbede, have been arraigned in court for alleged conspiracy and defilement of a twoyear-old girl.

The investigating police officer, Inspector Opeyemi Osayinro, told the Ado-Ekiti chief magistrate court yesterday that Sunday, described as the girl’s father, and Ajisegbede, who was said to be her great-grandmother, committed the offences on June 27, 2020 at Erinmope Ekiti, Moba Local Government Ekiti State.

Inspector Osayinro said Ajisegbede, whom he said had a history of high blood pressure, would always release the baby to her father every night because of her health condition and take her back in the morning. Osayinro said Ajisegbede later discovered while bathing the little girl that she was experiencing pains in her private part and took her to a Primary Health Centre, where it was confirmed she had been defiled.

Chief Magistrate (Mrs) Adefunmike Anoma frowned at the incessant mismanagement of the care and welfare of children and condemned what she called the carelessness of some parents and families. Anoma said that this had led to increase in assaulting and defiling of minors in the society.

She granted Ajisegbede bail in the sum of N20,000 because of her health condition, with one surety in like sum, while she ordered that Sunday be remanded at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado-Ekiti pending issuance of legal advice.

The chief magistrate also ordered that the grandmother, father-inlaw and mother of the little girl be arrested over alleged negligence and culpability in the case. She adjourned the case till August 12, 2020 for mention.
