NGA to promote ‘Rainbow Art’

The acting Director-General of the National Gallery of Art (NGA), Dr. Simon Ikpakronyi, has said the agency would promote the Rainbow Art programme towards boosting creativity among young Nigerians.

The programme has some packages in it that include the Unlocking Creativity skills development session, the National Visual Art Competition, the National Symposium of Nigeria Art, the Art Teachers Exhibition and the stakeholders’ forum.

At a press briefing in Abuja, NGA head also rolled out the agency’s post COVID-19 programmes for 2020. He said the NGA will maintain the safety protocols as prescribed by the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 while executing the programmes.

The second edition of the Rainbow Art held in 2019 with the theme: A new Nigeria: The Hope of the Nigerian Child and Youth. Students from over 30 schools within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) competed in the creative arts events. There were also exhibitions of paintings and other decorations made by contestants.

Ikpakronyi during the briefing decried the lack of a befitting gallery structure to display the works of artists in Nigeria.

He described Nigeria as one of the few countries in Africa without such edifice and said the NGA would organise a retreat with members of the National Assembly, Ministry of Information and Culture and other stakeholders to explore the possibility of having such structure.
