Obiano orders herdsmen to vacate tertiary institutions

- By Titus Eleweke, Awka

Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has ordered herdsmen grazing their cattle in higher institutions across the state to immediately vacate the areas or be arrested.

The order was given to the herdsmen on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the on Security, Hon Ostar Christopher, during a meeting of the state cattle menace control committee.

The meeting was held at the conference hall of the government house, led by the Chairman, the state Commissioner of Police, John Abang represented by DCP Maiyaki Baba, the chairman of Cattle breeders Association in the Southeast zone, Alhaji Gidado Sidikki and traditional rulers in the state.

Obiano regretted that despite the previous warnings to the herders to secure their herds, they had continued to be a menace to the crops, farms and tertiary institutions’ environments in the state.

He said the actions of the herders in the state, necessitated the marching order by the government through the committee.

Five traditional rulers had earlier told the committee about the continuous destruction of lives and crops in their respective communities allegedly by the herdsmen.

In their separate presentations, the monarchs called on the committee to expedite action to stop further destruction in their various communities especially this farming season.

The representative of the herdsmen, Alhaji Gidado Sidikki, appealed to the committee to consider herdsmen, who are law abiding to continue to operate in the state.

He promised to communicate the directive of the governor that those still within university premises should vacate immediately.
