How we’re handling COVID-19 candidates’ scripts – WAEC

- By Chidimma C. Okeke

The West African Examinations Council has explained how it is handling the scripts of COVID-19 infected candidates writing the ongoing Senior School Certificates Examinations.

Head, National Office, WAEC, Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan, explained this in Abuja yesterday while on inspection to Federal Government Boys College, Abuja, to see the level of compliance with COVID 19 principles and the response of the students to the examination situation.

“We go there and collect the exam scripts from a safe distance. We’ve opened a special bag for those scripts. We have equally been advised, because we’ve a medical team, that this is the best way to handle the scripts so that it won’t pose danger to anybody.

“The candidates infected have been isolated and we are conducting examinations for them. There’s collaboration between WAEC and various state ministries of Education, when it happens, the ministry of education and the ministry of health in the state will come together and get the medical experts that’ll conduct the exam for the candidate,” he said.

Some WASSCE candidates in Gombe, Akwa Ibom, Kwara and Bayelsa Stated had reportedly tested positive to COVID-19.

According to him, anywhere there are COVID-19 positive candidates, the WAEC will ensure they writes the examinations.

“It is not a death sentence there is no stigma. We take question papers to the isolation centre so that they don’t miss the exams,” he stated.
