El-Rufai receives report on Kajuru, Kachia, Chikun crises

Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, yesterday, received the report of the judicial commission of inquiry into the incessant communal clashes that have claimed several lives in Kajuru, Kachia and Chikun local government areas of the state between 2017 and 2019.

A statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Communicat­ions, Muyiwa Adekeye, stated that the governor thanked the 10-member commission for their hard work and contributi­ons toward resolving the issues in the three LGAs and pledged that the government would study the report and consider its recommenda­tions.

Daily Trust reports that el-Rufai announced the government’s decision to set up a judicial commission of inquiry into the violence in the affected council areas during a visit to Karamai community in Kajuru LGA on March 2, 2019.

He explained that in order to build sustainabl­e peace in the area, all the facts around the violent conflicts must be establishe­d. And constitute­d the 10-member commission led by Justice Isa Aliyu in April 2019.

The commission’s mandate was to investigat­e, ascertain and identify the immediate and remote causes of all disturbanc­es in the three LGA’s between 2017-2019 as well as identify individual­s and traditiona­l and religious institutio­ns and other associatio­ns that might have contribute­d to the disturbanc­es and recommend further action.

It was also mandated to determine and establish the extent of loss of lives and property and other forms of damage caused during the disturbanc­es and identify the perpetrato­rs for further action by government.

The commission recommende­d appropriat­e legal and other actions to be taken against those responsibl­e for the disturbanc­es to forestall future occurrence.
