Confusion prevailed at Hayin Malam Bello Community of Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State following the reported drowning of two persons in the area.

The incident took place around 10: am after a heavy downpour on Monday night, residents have said.

One of the victims was a commercial motorbike operator who attempted to cross the flooded bridge linking the community with Nnamdi Azikwe Expressway.

The second youth, who was said to have jumped into the river in an attempt to search for the drowned person also disappeared in the flooded river.

A resident, Albashir Yusuf, said the motorcycle belonging to the victim was recovered from the river.

The ward Head of the Community, Alhaji Ibrahim Fage, told Daily Trust that the two bodies have not been recovered since Tuesday.

“The bodies of the okada operator and the boy identified as Yahaya have not been recovered because they were both drowned in the river.

“I visited the father of the boy who is also a community leader to sympathise with him because it was a terrible loss,” he said.

He further appealed to the state government to renovate the bridge, saying each time it gets flooded, innocent people lost their lives.

Daily Trust reported that on 27th October 2019, a brideto-be lost her life at the same river as the tricycle conveying her capsized on the flooded bridge. A young mechanic that tried to rescue her also died and their bodies were not recovered almost a year now.

Similarly, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in collaboration with NEMA, Red Cross, and Fire Service visited communities that were submerged within the metropolis to rescue trapped persons.

The agency in a statement posted on its twitter handle listed the affected communities to include Unguwan Rimi, Rafin Guza, Malalin Gabas, Kigo Road, Bashama road in Tudun Wada, Barnawa, Romi/Karatudu, and others.
