Group calls for more assistance for orphans, less privileged

- From Faruk Shuaibu, Kaduna

The Born and Bred in Zaria Foundation, a humanitarian organisation, has called for increased efforts at addressing the plight of orphans and the needy in Kaduna and other parts of northern Nigeria.

The chairman of the group, Alhaji Bashir Abdulraheem, made the appeal in Kaduna at the presentation of award of excellence to Hajiya Hafsat Musa Haru, a philanthropist.

He urged those with the financial resources to channel their efforts into helping the needy and less privileged.

Abdulraheem said Hajiya Hafsat has reached out and changed the lives of dozens of women and children, “especially those in any form of disadvantaged position, like orphans and school drop outs.

He said she worked to ensure that issues of maternal mortality and morbidity were brought to the fore within our communities.

“She has created empowerment opportunities for women and youths through skill acquisition trainings and has issued many with start-up packs such as seedlings for those going into agriculture at their graduation,” he said.

Established in 2010 to cater for the less privileged and others in need, he said the Born and Bred in Zaria Foundation has, through the guidance of its grand patron, the Emir of Zazzau, Alh. Shehu Idris, focused on humanitarian services.

While receiving the award, Hajiya Hafsat said: “I have always helped people right from when I was a child. It was something that has always been with me and I believe that is why I naturally went into humanitarian services.”

She said her focus has been on orphans, women and the less privileged and announced plans to launch an empowerment project soon in Kaduna, Zaria and Daura in Katsina State.
