When Engineer Sule brought succour to recent flood victims in Nasarawa
The news of the recent flood that affected parts of the ancient town of Nasarawa, headquarters of Nasarawa Local Government area of Nasarawa State, came albeit with its consequences.
Many people were rendered homeless following early morning downpour early this week, precisely on September, 20, resulting in a flood that ravaged parts of the town.
On learning about the unfortunate incidence, Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, promptly set aside his schedules for the day, to visit the area affected by the flood, with a view to first, sympathizing with the persons affected, as well as to assess the level of damage.
On arriving Nasarawa town and having seen the devastating impact of the flood, Engineer Sule, quickly directed for the evacuation of those victims whose houses were submerged, with two temporary camps subsequently established at Kofar Kudu and Oversea, to provide temporary accommodation for the victims of the flood.
Not only that, the Governor immediately ordered that food items, mattresses, as well as other relief materials, be provided to the affected community without delay.
While showing appreciation to the Emir of Nasarawa, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibrin, as well as the Chairman of the council, Hon. Mohammed Oto, Engineer Sule urged the people in the area to desist from building on waterways and stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages.
The Governor expressed the commitment of his administration to review the channelization project in the areas, stressing that government will seek the collaboration of the Federal Government in order to address the agelong ecological problems in Nasarawa town.
Items distributed to the victims of the flood include 1150 bags of guinea corn, 100 bags of millet, 400 bags of maize, 5 bags of garri, 10 bags of rice, 5 bags of beans, 100 pieces of mats, 130 blankets, 100 mosquito nets, as well as unspecified quantity of building materials.
This was the second flood affecting Nasarawa town in less than two weeks.
Recall that the Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Meteorological Agency (NIMET), in collaboration with the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), had last year issued warnings on flooding and also predicted that some communities are likely to be affected as a result of flood disaster before the end of the raining season.
Nasarawa State was named among states likely to witness flood.
