- From Abubakar Auwal, Sokoto

The Sokoto State Governor’s wife, Hajiya Mariya Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has said that lack of proper reporting system was contributing to the menace of sexual abuse in the country.

In an exclusive interview with our reporter, she said that “when the victims have access to an anonymous and convenient reporting system, it will protect their dignity and privacy.

“The system will help give voice to the voiceless and scare people away from committing the crime,” she noted.

that would prescribe capital punishment for perpetrators.

“Social menace like this reflects how loose our cultural values have become and weak enforcement of the law.

“When you set capital punishment for perpetrators of these crimes, it will serve as a deterrent to others, and it will help curb the spread of the menace.

“So, new legislation must be put in place to ensure appropriate punishment and prevention.

“So, I encourage our lawmakers to pass laws that will ensure capital punishment for the perpetrators of these crimes,” she appealed

Mariya, who is the founder of Mariya Tambuwal Development Initiative (MTDI) which has been championing the cause of weak and vulnerable in the state, said every Nigerian has to take action to protect the vulnerable against any abuse.

“It is not a one gender issue. We can only curb this issue when we all take it as our collective responsibilities, whether we are men or women,” she saidd.

The governor’s wife, said that at the Forum of Governors’ Wives, they have set a common target and framework to address this menace while reflecting on their individual state’s peculiarities.
