1 dead, many injured as hoodlums attack cops in Lagos

Palpable tension now hovers around Lagos State metropolis as suspected members of various secret cult gangs and thugs are said to have hijacked the ongoing #EndSARS protests to unleash terror in various communitie­s in the state.

The armed hoodlums, who trooped out in their numbers in various areas of the state, descended on security operatives as well as civilians.

Most commercial buses stayed off the road for fear of destructio­n.

BRT buses also did not operate throughout the better part of Monday. Most of the blue BRT buses were seen parked at the various terminals at Obalende, Oshodi and Ikeja.

The protesters became more vicious along Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba, as they pelted operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (SARS) with stones.

One person was allegedly knocked down by a vehicle while trying to escape attack from the hoodlums at Adekunle Bus Stop on Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba.

Some witnesses alleged that the man died on the spot. Those who sustained injuries in the confusion include operatives of the RRS.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the attack, said the protest got heightened on Monday when violent protesters descended on some policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Command at Adekunle, Yaba, around 10am.

He said the 97 policemen, who were attacked, were being conveyed to their various beats on routine relief duties across the state.
