Arms, drugs recovered from Lagos shanties

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit at the weekend demolished about 1,700 shanties and shops built on drainage systems and rail lines in Fagba area of Agege.

The officials also recovered arms and ammunition, as well as illicit substances, during the exercise which lasted several hours.

The state government earlier issued the occupants a 14-day eviction order and another seven-day notice which expired at the weekend.

The Chairman the agency, Superintendent

of

of Chief Police,

Olayinka Egbeyemi, made the disclosure after the exercise.

CSP Egbeyemi explained that the owners/occupants of the shanties and shops were served a sevenday removal order by the government based on complaints about criminal activities in the area.

He said, “The shanties and shops were occupied by miscreants and hoodlums who hide behind the structures to terrorise innocent citizens around Fagba, Iju-Ishaga and PenCinema areas.”

He further said, “The place was an eyesore; with miscreants and hoodlums freely smoking and selling Indian hemp, including prostitution by underage boys and girls around the railway lines in Fagba.”

He further revealed that investigations conducted by operatives of the agency revealed that the miscreants and hoodlums occupying the shanties were responsible for the destruction of public property and looting after the #EndSARS protest.
