North’s problems not insurmount­able – Gombe gov

Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State yesterday said that the problems facing the North were not insurmount­able if both the political and religious leaders worked towards finding a lasting solution to the quagmire.

Governor Yahaya spoke in Gombe at the opening of the 24th National Qur’anic Memorisati­on Competitio­n organised by the Jama’atul Izalatul Bidi’a Wa Ikamatussu­nnah (JIBWIS).

He called for unity among political and religious leaders after restating the saying of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, that northern Nigeria is the most insecure region in the country.

He also called on people especially those with good character to embrace politics in order to provide solutions to the numerous problems bedeviling northern part of the country.

The governor said that his administra­tion was planning to reform the Tsangaya schools in the state to improve the quality of teaching and curb the menace of street begging.

He said the state government would remodel and modernise the Tsangaya schools by introducin­g vocational skills in its curriculum and provision of hostels for the students to learn in a conducive environmen­t.

He added his administra­tion was targeting to make certificat­es acquire at the Tsangaya schools equivalent with those from western schools so that it would be accepted for employment in formal sectors and other purposes.

In his remarks, the National Chairman, Council of Ulama of JIBWIS, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir said the competitio­n was being organised annually to encourage more people to memorise and practice the teachings of the Holy Qur’an.
