LASTMA investigates extortion allegation against officers by drivers

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has commenced an investigation into cases of extortion levelled against its personnel on traffic duty by drivers and other road users. The investigation follows a video of officials of LASTMA collecting N11, 300 at Agege which had gone viral on social media.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olajide Oduyoye, promised that those found to have been involved in the extortion of the victim would be dealt with according to the state criminal laws.

Oduyoye disclosed that the agency has commenced investigation into extortion claims contained in a viral post on Facebook by a Lagos motorist accusing some LASTMA officials of extorting N11,300 from him at one of the zonal commands in Agege.

Oduyoye gave assurance that the photographic evidence provided by the complainant would be scrutinised and any officer found culpable would be made to face the consequences under the extant rules of the State Civil Service as specified.

While encouraging members of the public to always come forward with their complaints with evidence against corrupt officials, the general manager, however, pointed out that there are many LASTMA officials that are dedicated, conscientious and professional in carrying out their official functions as observed during the LASTMA CONNECT programme aired on Traffic Radio with many Lagos residents acknowledging the good work of the traffic-control personnel.
