Bandits shoot dead groom for stopping rape attempt on wife

- From Shehu Umar, Gusau

Suspected armed bandits killed a groom after he refused to allow them rape his bride in Gando village of Bukuyyum local government area of Zamfara state.

A resident, Yusha’u Gwashi, told our correspondent that the armed men invaded the house of the newly-wed couple and attempted to rape the bride.

“Her husband, called Unma, warned them to stop the sexual advance to his wife or face the dire consequences. One of the armed men ignored the warning and grabbed the bride.

“The husband then hit the armed bandit with a wood and blood began to gush from his head. This obviously was what angered the rest of the armed men and one of them fired shot at the groom and was left lying in the pool of his own blood. He was rushed to hospital and was later confirmed dead. He had since been buried,” Gwashi said.

The resident lamented how the armed criminals have been sexually molesting women in the community. He said rape has become the order of the day.

“Sometimes, they would invade our communities in large number and then herd our women and young ladies into bush apparently to rape them. This is really very humiliating,” he added

“The criminals have stolen virtually all the cattle in the area and are now focusing on goats being reared by women. Some of our women have moved their animals to bigger communities in the neighborhood”

“There was a time the Gando village was under their control and all wellmeaning individuals in the community had to flee for safety. The criminals are very much around they rob people at will and many a times go unchallenged,” he added.
