Court convicts two fake EFCC operatives, 8 others in Ogun

A Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State has sentenced two brothers for impersonat­ing officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The brothers, Beyioku Olatunji (a.k.a Bashorun), Beyioku Oluwayomi Oluwafemi (a.k.a Ola 1) were arraigned in January 2020 on 18-count charges bordering on conspiracy, impersonat­ion, forgery, money laundering and obtaining money under false pretences.

The court also convicted Adeleke Ridwan Adekunle, AbdulFatai Waliu, Adelani Sarafa Yomi, Folarin Ikeoluwa Akinleye, Adebisi Abiola Victor, Adio

Toheeb Oladimeji, Ogundulu Oluwashola Temitope and Amoo Rilwan Babatunde, for various offences.

The convicts were arraigned on Wednesday before the court by the Ibadan Zonal office of the EFCC.

The Beyioku brothers, were arrested in November 2019 for falsely presenting themselves as operatives of the EFCC to defraud members of the public.

They pleaded not guilty when the charges was read to them. They thereafter approached the commission for a plea bargain.

The Beyioku brothers and the eight other defendants on Wednesday pleaded guilty to one count of impersonat­ion separately filed against them by the EFCC.

Following their pleas, prosecutio­n counsels Murtala Usman, Oyelakin Oyediran and Shamsuddee­n Bashir, prayed the court to convict them accordingl­y.

Justice Mohammed Abubakar sentenced the Beyioku brothers to 18 months imprisonme­nt from the day of arrest without option of fine, while Adelani got 12 months imprisonme­nt without option of fine.

Adio was jailed six months with an option of N200, 000 fine; Adeleke and Waliu four months jail with an option of N100, 000 fine while Ogundulu bagged four months with an option of fine.

Amoo was jailed three months with an option of N200,000 fine
