NULGE urges Nigerians to reject moves to delist LGAs

The National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has urged Nigerians to oppose any move to delist Local Government Areas (LGAs) from the Nigerian Constitution.

The National President of the union, Comrade Ambali Akeem Olatunji, made the call in Katsina during the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected state exco of the union.

Olatunji, who was represented by the National Treasurer and outgoing Katsina State President of NULGE, Comrade Aliyu Haruna Kankara, said the union had written to the National Assembly, calling on the lawmakers to oppose the bill sponsored by a representative from Rivers State, aimed at removing LGAs as third tier of government.

“That bill is anti-masses, it is anti-progress and if allowed to see the light of the day, it will further aggravate the economic hardship in the country, worsen the problem of insecurity and raise poverty level among the populace,” he said.

The NULGE president said members would be mobilised to shut down the 774 LGAs in the country and stage a protest in Abuja if the House of Representatives insisted on passing the bill.

He, however, expressed hope that the situation would not be allowed to reach such stage.

In his address, the new Katsina NULGE president,

Comrade Mai’adua, lauded Governor Aminu Bello Masari for the prompt payment of staff salaries, entitlement of retirees and deceased persons’ benefits.

“It is on record that local government workers in the state are not owed arrears of salaries while promotion to the deserving staff is done and implemented accordingly,” he said.
