Sinking of boreholes increases as water scarcity intensifies in Kogi

- From Adama John, Lokoja.

Many towns in Kogi State, particularly Lokoja the state capital, have continued to witness upsurge in the sinking of boreholes by individuals to cushion the adverse effect of scarcity of water as it continues unabated.

The supply of water by the The Greater Lokoja Water Plant over the years has remained very low and discriminatory which informed the need to embark on sinking of boreholes by some individuals to manage the situation.

The sinking of boreholes in the town has assumed a competitive dimension among the landlords.

A survey by our correspondent showed that places like Lokongoma (phases 1 and 11), Shetima and Ganaja are deeply involved in this business.

Mrs. Saidatu Abdullahi, who resides in Lokongoma, told North Central Trust that they rely on those houses who have boreholes for their daily water needs.

“We walk to these places every morning to fetch water to our fill. The only time we don’t get water is when there is no light the previous night or there is problem of pumping,” she said.

In Ganaja especially along Ganaja-Otokiti by-pass road, the situation is slightly different as water vendors are rarely seen to be patronized.

A resident, Mrs. Oguche, said: “We buy a bucket of rubber paint at N10.00 from borehole owners when they decide to sell the water to us and unfortunately for us here, water vendors are rarely seen,” she said.

“We are really suffering from water scarcity here for many years,” she said.
