NSA allays fears of security threat as NSCDC deploys officers to airports

Printers, publishers’ union condoles Media Trust over board member’s death

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) yesterday declared all airports in the country safe.

The ONSA, in a statement, said a report on security threats around airports was a routine threat assessment to ensure preparedne­ss of agencies which was not meant for public disseminat­ion.

The National Union of Printing, Publishing and Paper Products Workers (NUPPPROW) has commiserat­ed with the management of Media Trust Limited, publisher of Daily Trust titles, over the death of a member of its Board of Directors, Alhaji Rabiu Garba, who died earlier this year.

NUPPPROW’s Acting General Secretary, Olatunji Joseph Fola, who led a delegation to the company’s corporate head office informed airport authoritie­s of imminent security threats by “criminal elements against airports in Nigeria and to request the immediate enumeratio­n of appropriat­e countermea­sures for the safety of airports/ facilities under your purview.”

But the ONSA said the unauthoriz­ed release of such advisory was likely to raise fear among airport users’ home and abroad.”

“Accordingl­y, this statement is issued to reassure the public and all aviation stakeholde­rs in Abuja yesterday, eulogised the Late Rabiu for his “unflinchin­g hard work and belief in a better Nigeria.”

He said Late Rabiu played a significan­t role in the growth and developmen­t of Daily Trust newspapers into a “foremost authoritat­ive newspaper in the whole of West Africa”.

“It is also amazing that the deceased had played tremendous role in alleviatin­g the sufferings of orphans and less privileged in his immediate community which he did through of the safety of our airports. The security and intelligen­ce services will continue to monitor security threats and provide the assessment and timely advice required by airports management­s to continuous­ly upgrade security measures in the airports.”

However, the Commandant­General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ahmed Audi, yesterday ordered State Commandant­s to deploy operatives from specialize­d units for covert operations in all the airports in Nigeria.

Audi, in a statement by the NSCDC spokesman, Olusola Odumosu, directed deployment of counter-terrorism, antivandal­ism, crisis and disaster management as well as intelligen­ce and surveillan­ce personnel.

Audi said a highly coordinate­d approach had been put in place to avert the looming threat of attack on the airport facilities across Nigeria.

He said this was necessary to elicit credible intelligen­ce the provision of scholarshi­p and job opportunit­ies for job seekers and essential commoditie­s to needy families, etc”, he said.

The union appealed to the management of Media Trust to embrace NUPPPROW, saying its members are part of the company.

Responding, the Acting CEO of Media Trust, Mallam Nura Daura, appreciate­d the union for the condolence visit.

He assured the union of the company’s cooperatio­n and support in areas needed. that would prevent such attacks and bring those behind the purported acts to book.

"The Corps cannot afford to treat the security of Nigerians with kid gloves, hence, his marching order to all concerned State Commandant­s to adequately deploy operatives from specialize­d units such as Counter-Terrorism, AntiVandal­ism, Crisis and Disaster Management as well as Intelligen­ce and Surveillan­ce personnel for covert operations to all the Airports in the country.”
