FG, Yobe begin N8.4bn Damaturu regional water project
The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Yobe State Government, has commenced the implementation of the N8.4 billion Damaturu regional water scheme.
The Yobe State Commissioner for Water Resources, Senator Alkali Abdulkadir Jajere, disclosed this while signing the contract agreement for the project in Damaturu.
He noted that the objective of the project was to complement the efforts of the state government towards addressing water problems within the state capital and its environs
He said the project, which started in 2006, suffered some significant setbacks occasioned by insecurity and lack of funding.
He assured that once the project was completed the issue of water shortage within Damaturu and environs would be a thing of the past.
The commissioner, therefore, congratulated the people of the state on the project.
He urged the contractors to adhere to the terms of the contract and all other specifications contained in the bill of quantity given to them by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources.
Signing on behalf of the Federal Government, Habu Hassan, Assistant Director, Urban Water Supply, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, said the project would be completed within 24 months.
He said about three contractors would be engaged to handle the project.
He said: “Lot ‘A’ for the Malam
Matari project WILL be handled by Gamji Company Nigeria Limited for N3.7 billion.
“Lot ‘B’, which is the Murfakalam, will be handled by Ismade Integrated Nigeria limited for N 2.4 billion; while Lot ‘C’ will be handled by Jidadu Ventures Limited at an approximate contract sum of N2.3 billion”.
He said the project would be jointly supervised by engineers of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and those of Yobe.
“With this joint supervision, we want to inform the contractors that we are not going to compromise any standard,” he said.
Hassan commended the Yobe State Government for its support to ensure the project came to life.
