Mbaka: Catholic church calls for atonement over ‘Holy Altar’s’ desecration

- From Tony Adibe, Enugu

The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has, for the first time officially, reacted to the invasion of the Bishop's Court and the Holy Ghost Cathedral Church by the adherents of Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka.

The church advised all faithful in the Enugu diocese to embark on prayer for atonement concerning the desecration of God’s altar by Mbaka’s followers who went wild on Wednesday vandalizing the bishop’s court and part of the Holy Ghost Cathedral.

Daily Trust recalls that tension and confusion enveloped Enugu on Wednesday when Mbaka's followers flooded the streets and roads upon hearing the news on social media that he was missing.

The angry supporters went to the Holy Ghost Cathedral where several church facilities were also destroyed.

But the founder and spiritual director of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria (AMEN), Fr. Mbaka, later re-appeared, spoke to his supporters, telling them that he would have been kept incommunicado by the bishop for 30 days but for their protest.

However, the church authority in Enugu on Thursday commented on the burning issue, insisting that the members engaged in a prayer of ‘atonement and reparation’ over what it regarded as a desecration of ‘the holy altar of sacrifice’.

In the statement signed on Thursday by the Bishop of Enugu Catholic Diocese, Bishop Callistus Onaga, the church called on all parishes, chaplaincies and religious houses in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu to quickly embark on the prayer.
