Trainees inspired to take up farming in Borno

- From Misbahu Bashir, Maiduguri

The federal government has trained 100 persons in sustainable agriculture as part of the efforts to revive the insurgency ravaged economy of Borno State.

The essence of the exercise is to preserve the environment while ensuring economic profitability as well as social and economic equity.

The Coordinator, National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Borno State, Mrs. Mairo Aliyu, said during the orientation exercise that the participants were chosen from the three senatorial districts of the state.

She said the objective of the training was to inspire the trainees in agricultural production and distribution systems which would provide more profitable farm income, promote environmental stewardship and enhance quality of life for farm families and communities.

This would increase the aggregate outputs of farm households and non-farm activities in areas where normality had returned after insurgency, she stated.

She said, “The training curriculum was structured to include crop farming, livestock production, agripreneurship and marketing. It will run for three months out of which two weeks will be for experiment while the remaining period is for activities at the adaptive farm.”

The Acting Director General, NDE, Malam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, represented by Mal. Mohammed Dahiru, said the programme was in line with the federal government’s policy on agriculture “mainly for employment, wealth creation and food sufficiency.”
