Nyagh bullish about 2021 Women’s Handball World Cup ticket
The captain of the national female handball team, Dorathy Nyagh is optimistic that the team will shine at the forthcoming African Women’s Handball Championship in Cameroon and also qualify for the 2021 World Cup in Spain.
The team made up of 24 players is currently in camp at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Military Cantonment in Abuja.
Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, the captain hinged his confidence on the calibre of young players who have been assembled for the continental championship.
Nyagh said having spent two weeks already in camp, she can say with every iota of confidence that the team is not going to come back from Cameroon empty handed.
She said even as the Head Coach of the team is yet to join the team in camp, his assistants have been doing everything to put the squad in the best possible shape.
The captain added that the surprise visit by the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare on their second day in camp is a morale booster that will inspire the team at the championship.
“I want to assure Nigerians that we are not going to let them down. Going by our preparation so far, I am confident that we would qualify for the World Cup.
“The four top countries will qualify and I don’t see us missing out of the top four at the championship.
“It is not going to be easy because we would be up against formidable oppositions like Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo and the host country, Cameroon but we are not perturbed.
“I am sure they will also give us our due respect. So we won’t be in Cameroon for jamboree. We are going there to fight for one of the World Cup tickets,” she said.
Nyagh also expressed happiness that Nigeria will be taking part in the tournament after over 20 years hiatus.
“We are all motivated. We want to write our names in gold and bring honour to our fatherland,” she added.
The 24th edition of the championship will be held from 8-18, June in Yaounde, Cameroon.
