Four junior secondary school students have been killed in Suleja, Niger State, when a Honda saloon car ran over them while on their way home from school.

A commercial tricyclist also lost his life while trying to avoid the accident scene.

The incident happened on Tuesday along Kaduna road by IBB market Suleja.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Suleja ‘A’ Division, CSP Sani Zubairu, said the vehicle driver reported himself to the police immediately after the accident and was in their custody.

A witness, Muhammad Adam, said the driver tried to avoid a tricycle operator but lost control and ran over the students.

“The car owner, who was coming from the Kadunaroad

axis of the town, heading towards IBB market Suleja, lost control and ran over the secondary school students.

“Four students and one tricycle operator died on the spot, while five other students sustained injuries and were taken to Suleja hospital for treatment,” he added.

Residents in the area said the incident was coming a day after schools resumption in the state following the short Eid al-Adha

Sallah break.

Meanwhile, there was panic in the area on the same day after a truck conveying cooking gas started leaking its content at the point of offloading at a gas plant.

A resident, Aliyu Adamu, said many residents fled the area on noticing the development.

He said fire fighters arrived at the scene and remained on standby, until the content was washed away following a rainfall, Adamu said.
