-

None of the occupants of the bus that plunged into a mining pit at Enyigba community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi has been rescued, two days after the accident.

The Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Loveth Odah, told Daily Trust yesterday that the police and other relevant agencies were still working at the scene of the accident to bring out the victims.

She said also local divers had been called to work with police on the rescue efforts.

The state command Image maker said that poor visibility was hindering the rescue operation which started yesterday.

Daily Trust learnt that the incident happened on Saturday night.

According to her,” no single person has been rescued so far.’’

She said witnesses told the police that the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle and fell into an unclaimed mining pit, which was water-logged due to constant rainfall.

“However, the rescue operation is still ongoing as we speak but we have not recorded any positive success since then. Again, we have secured another crane we are using at the scene’’, she said.

Odah noted that the number of passengers inside the vehicle has not been ascertained on Sunday.

Apart from poor visibility, our correspondent gathered that the rescue operation was also hindered by a non-functional crane.

When contacted the Commissioner for Internal Security and border Peace, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, said efforts were being intensified to rescue the trapped victims.

“We have arranged for a crane to continue with the rescue process because the one being used by the state ministry of works had a minor fault. We have ordered that it should be repaired immediately as the incident was sudden and unfortunate,” he said.
