God will give us a president like Buhari in 2023 – Gov Umahi

President aware of Nigerians suffering – Minister

- By Muideen Olaniyi (Abuja) & Eyo Charles (Calabar)

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has expressed his desire that God gives the country a personality with a “good heart” like President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Buhari’s second term will lapse in May 2023. Already, politicking for his seat has peaked with top shots in both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheming for it.

Umahi expressed his wish on Monday while fielding questions from newsmen after a visit to President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The governor, however, said it was too early to engage in the politics of 2023, describing it as a distraction to the president and state governors.

He said members of different political parties from the South East were working to ensure that the parties conceded their presidential tickets to the region.

Asked whether South East leaders were working to get the main political parties to zone the presidency to their region, he said: “Well, for me, I’m very much entrenched in completing my projects. And I will look into politics when my tenure is remaining one year, which is from May 29, 2022. And I think it is the same thing with other governors of South East and by extension, governors of APC.

“My position about what you ask is that our people that are in those political parties are making efforts in selling the need for South East to produce the next president.

“But I think both the governors and Mr. President should not be distracted. When the election is conducted and won, it should be governance. But in this country, the moment the election is completed the next one starts and it is the masses that are being cheated.

“So, those whose job is politics and who are not in elected positions, or appointed positions have all the time and the opportunity to do this canvassing. And I think they are doing it and doing it very well.

“But I continue to say that power rests in the hands of God. And God will also give us the next president who has a good heart like President Buhari for the good of this country.

“We need God’s own anointing for our own anointed president for the interests and unity of this country.”

Meanwhile, the minister of state for Power, Gody JedyAgba, has appealed to the people of his immediate communities in Obudu LGA of Cross River State to pray fervently for and support Buhari’s administration to succeed.

He said the president appreciates what Nigerians are presently going through and was working assiduously to lessen their burdens.

Speaking when they bestowed on him and his wife chieftaincy titles yesterday, Jedy-Agba said, “I’m a minister today because of President Muhammadu Buhari. So if you love me and support me as I have seen, you must also love and support the president.

“We understand the challenges Nigerians are facing and I can assure you that the president is not sleeping. He’s working tirelessly to make Nigeria great again.”
