Police record 53 gender violence cases in Bauchi

-

The Bauchi State Police Command has said there is reduction in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases in the state as it has recorded only 53 cases this year compared to 149 last year.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the command, SP Ahmed Wakili, revealed that there were 149 cases of gender violence in the state last year in which 257 suspected perpetrators were arrested.

Wakil disclosed this during a five-day training of senior officers of the Nigeria Police and National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on human rights and GBV organised by Society for Family Health (SFH) in collaboration with the Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Malaria (BACATMA), Adamawa State Agency for the Control of AIDS held at the Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi.

He attributed the reduction of GBV to the fight against the menace by the police and other security agents, adding that the command opened gender violence desks in every division to tackle the problem.

The Deputy Managing Director of Society for Family Health, Dr Jennifer Anyanti, explained that the training is to educate the senior law enforcement officers on human rights issues and GBV so that they could professionally handle the violations.

She also said the training was paramount because law enforcement agents were stakeholders in human rights protection hence the need to train them so they would know how best to defend human rights and handle human rights violation cases professionally.
