Why we shunned Kaduna LG polls – Residents

Residents of Kaduna have given reasons why they shunned the just concluded local council election in the state.

While some said they had lost hope in the leaders, others said their votes in 2019 did not count.

Tukur Kwairanga told Arewa Trust Weekly that he no longer took part in the elections because he realised his vote did not count.

“I did not go out to queue at the polling unit to exercise my fundamental right as a citizen because of the disappointment I experienced after the 2019 election.

“Those that we elected into power do not care and they neglect those that voted them into power. I just decided to stay at home and reflect more on how to prosper without depending on government.”

Another voter, Engineer Muhammad Bello, said most of the party flagbearers were not the right people to be leaders and will not make good representatives.

“We witnessed what happened in the last three years, especially in Kaduna south. The current chairman is not providing any empowerment to his people. By now, voters are supposed to know and understand the type of candidate they should vote for; someone who has something to offer in terms of development and empowerment.

“We expect our leaders to engage the teeming youths in various skills so that they can be self-sufficient and stop roaming the streets but our politicians today will not help the youth, instead they will be giving them little money to destroy their lives.”

On her part, Zulaihat Surajuddin in Mogadishu area, Kaduna metropolis, said she voted only in 201. “After that I lost interest in politics because the leaders did not live up to their promises.

“My prayer is that we have good candidates who will fulfil the promises they made to the people.”
