NDLEA makes seizures in 9 states

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcemen­t Agency (NDLEA) have seized over 24,311kg of heroin, codeine and Arizona and Colorado variants of Indian hemp at the Murtala Mohammed Internatio­nal Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, and the Tin Can Seaport, Apapa, all in Lagos State.

Spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday in Abuja, said the first seizure was on Friday, September 3, 2021, at the SAHCO export shed of MMIA where two consignmen­ts of 10.350kg heroin and 25.2kg cannabis from South Africa were intercepte­d.

He said in a sting operation between Saturday, September 4, and Monday, September 6, in different parts of Lagos, four suspects were arrested, including Mrs Bello Kafayat Ayo, who was picked on Shino Street, Palmgroove area of the state.

He also said narcotic officers seized a 40ft container loaded with 22,590kg of Barcadin Codeine syrup following intelligen­ce received from internatio­nal partners on the container at the Tin Can Seaport.

Mr Babafemi said, “The container was also found to include 4,020.03kg of analgesic tablets and 47 cartons of insulated hot pots used to conceal the illicit drugs, all imported from India.”

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old graduate, Miss Bee Okoro, was arrested in Abuja for producing and selling drugged candies and cookies.

Babafemi said, “A 27-year-old dispatch rider, Idewo Raimi, who handles door-todoor delivery for her was also arrested.”

He said the suspects were arrested at Garki Area 11 with 400g of Loud and Arizona and that they had confessed to operating the drug business for over a year.

Seizures were also made in Edo, Kaduna, Taraba, Kwara and Gombe states with a suspect each arrested in Kaduna and Kwara.
