FG floats Science TV

The federal government yesterday inaugurate­d the Inter-Ministeria­l Committee for Nigeria Science, Technology and Innovation Television (ScienceTV@NG) to drive economic growth.

The Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu, said science, technology and innovation remained the main driving force of growth and developmen­t in the nation hence the need for the TV.

According to Onu, the TV station is to get Nigerians to appreciate the relevance and importance of Science Technology and Innovation (STI) to nation building. He said the television programme would also cover every aspect of national life, including engineerin­g, health and medicine, natural science, environmen­t and wildlife, science and society, agricultur­e and children curiosity among others.

Onu also said the programme would also focus on Nigeria’s contributi­ons to STI by publishing latest outputs and products from all research institutio­ns and latest STI developmen­ts from all over the world.

He said the programme would also showcase “how our ancestors embrace science, technology and innovation in their daily activities by using locally available materials for their food, nutrition, drugs and medicine, building of houses.”

He said knowing the past would help the youth to be more creative, inventive and innovative, and help prepare their future to be bright and promising. Earlier, the ministry’s permanent secretary and chairman of the committee, Edet Akpan, gave the compositio­n of membership to include the Ministries of Education as Environmen­t as well as that of Communicat­ion and Digital Technology.
