Borno Gov appoints ex-UN representative to head Advisory Committee on Governance, Development
Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Saturday inaugurated the Borno State Advisory Committee on Governance and Development which is aimed at creating people’s inclusiveness and opportunity of control over their affairs.
The comittee is headed by a former Nigeria’s Deputy Permanent representative at the United Nations, Ambassador Usman Sarki, a diplomat and development expert, who had worked at the Permanent Secretariat of the African Union (AU) to the United Nations in Geneva as Minister Plenipotentiary; and at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), as Consultant to the Development Agenda Coordination Division.
Others are Alh. Muhammad Mustapha Bintube, Hajja Kaka Suleiman Gumsuri, Alh. Musa Kida, Prof. Isa Hussaini Marte, Joerg Kuehnel, Prof. Ali Mburza, Prof. Iqbal Asaria, Hon. Alh. Bukar Tijjani and Dr Mairo Mandara as members; while Muhammad Bukar Badiya will serve as Secretary.
Inaugurating the 10-member advisory committee at the Council Chambers of the Government House on Saturday, Zulum said his administration was committed to making Borno a favoured destination for businesses, investors and partners, and will ensure that supremacy of the rule of law is of critical importance.
He noted that his administration would continue to ensure that peace and security are sustained which, according to him, is critical to attaining development in any society.
The governor listed four specific terms of reference for the committee which as as follows:
1. Advise the governor on governance and development issues that will fast track the renaissance and development of Borno State.
2. Explore potential national and global opportunities including the private sector that will support the implementation of the Borno State’s 25-Year Development Plan.
3. Advise the governor and explore opportunities on strengthening government institutions for improved effectiveness and efficiency.
4. Actively champion and seek opportunities for climate action and environmental protection for Borno State. 5. Be champions for the Borno State’s 25-year Development Plan and the10-year Strategic Transformation Initiatives.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the chairman, Ambassador Usman Sarki expressed gratitude to the governor for finding him and his members worthy to serve the state.
He assured Zulum that the committee was clear about its responsibilities and would be committed to bringing out collective experiences and knowledge to support the state government.
