Mama Boko Haram, 2 others jailed over N40m ‘fraud’

A Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri, the State Capital, has jailed one Aisha Alkali Wakil popularly known as Mama Boko Haram alongside two others, Tahiru Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Soyade for 10 years over N40m fraud.

Justice Umaru Fadawu jailed the trio after they were found guilty on a twocount charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N40,000,000.00, which they were for by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

had reported how the trio were arraigned before the court by the Maiduguri zonal command of the EFCC in 2020 following the detailed investigat­ion carried out by the operatives of the antigraft agency.

The three convicts’ journey to the prison began when a petitioner alleged that they swindled him through a purported contract for the supply of five X-ray machines 1900 with Solar Energy to a Non-Government­al Organisati­on, Complete Care and Aid Foundation, worth N40m.

The trio neither supplied the machines nor returned the contract sum to the petitioner.

The defendants pleaded “not guilty” when the charges were read to them.

Counsel for the prosecutio­n counsel, A.I Arogha presented four witnesses and tendered seventeen exhibits before the court.

Consequent­ly, Justice Fadawu convicted and sentenced them to ten years imprisonme­nt for the offence of conspiracy. The court further sentenced the defendants to ten years imprisonme­nt for the offence of obtaining by false pretence and ordered them to jointly and severally pay the sum of N40m to Bashir Muhammad.
