Ghanaian central bank governor resigns for personal reasons

-

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku, has resigned after serving only 11 months out of a four- year mandate. Isshaku announced that he decided to leave his post for personal reasons.

The 55-year-old central banker was appointed by former President John Mahama in April 2016 ahead of a hardfought election in December, which incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo won. Ghanaian media reports said Issahaku was hounded out of his position by senior members of the new government because of his political leanings.

During his tenure, Issahaku was at the centre of efforts aimed at stabilizing the country's finances by reducing inflation, budget deficit and public debt under a three-year $1 billion International Monetary Fund programme. He will be succeeded by Ernest Kwamina Addision, the Lead Regional Economist at the Southern African Resource Centre of the African Development Bank.
