- From Usman A. Belo, Benin

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 5, Abubakar Adamu Muhammed, has said that the force would adopt a new strategy to effectively combat the rising wave of crime in the Edo State.

The AIG Zone 5, is in charge of Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states.

AIG Muhammed disclosed this while speaking with journalists after a meeting with the state’s Commissioner of Police, Halilu Gwandu.

“As you can see, crime is dynamic and the strategy we had in place before would be reviewed. We have discussed the crime situation in the state and the new strategy to checkmate the current wave of crime,” he said.

On manpower shortage in the Force, he said, “we have 10,000 recruits undergoing training at the moment and when they are out, there would be additional manpower to beef up security in the state”.

He charged men and officers to be dedicated to their duties and also take human right issues seriously, so as not to erode the confidence of the public.

Earlier, the state Commissioner of Police, Halilu Gwandu, said the police would not relent in the fight against crime.

He assured that the perpetrators of the recent killings in the state would be brought to book.

The commissioner called on members of the public to assist the police with information to enable them carry out their duties effectively.
