Arsenal on worst Premier League run under Wenger

-

Yesterday was another difficult day for the Gunners at West Brom which has been highlighted by a statistic that will certainly not please their manager.

Arsene Wenger’s future at Arsenal grew even more uncertain on as he watched his side slump to a 3-1 defeat against West Brom at the Hawthorns yesterday meaning he is on his worst league run since taking charge in 1996.

Although Alexis Sanchez scored after 15 minutes for the visitors, they already trailed by a Craig Dawson goal. The centre-back would later add the hosts’ third after Hal RobsonKanu found the target shortly after the restart.

It proved to be Arsenal’s sixth defeat in their last nine matches – a spell that has seen them fall off the top-four pace in the Premier League and crash out of the Champions League in an embarrassing manner against Bayern Munich.

The Frenchman’s side lost home and away to the Germans, while domestically they had also been defeated by Watford, Chelsea and Liverpool prior to Saturday’s game.

Incredibly, it is the first time that the Gunners have suffered four defeats in five league outings since Stewart Houston was in charge in April of 1995. Wenger took charge in September 1996 and had never known such a sequence until now.

Among this spell of wretched form, the Gunners’ only victories have come against non-league opponents Sutton United and Lincoln City in the FA Cup, as well as relegation-threatened Hull City in the Premier League.
