Agitation for break up needless – David Mark

- By Ismail Mudashir

Aformer Senate President, Senator David Mark, yesterday condemned calls for the break-up of the country, saying the agitations are needless.

Mark, in his Eid-el-fitr message, asked the agitators to have a re-think, adding, “the trend today is that nations are coming together and bridging gaps for mutual cooperation under a new world order of globalization for a better society. Nigeria is part of the global community.”

He urged Muslim faithful to imbibe the lessons of the holy month of Ramadan and continue to pray for peace, unity and stability of Nigeria.

He warned that another civil war for the country will be devastating and catastrophic, not only for Nigeria but for the entire African continent.

He acknowledged that there may be shortcomings in the system, but expressed optimism that they can be addressed amicably through legitimate channels.

“We should have learnt bitter lessons from that war. Another war is needless. We cannot survive another. We can resolve all grievances at a round-table conference in a manner of give and take and mutual respect.

“What we require as a people is an egalitarian society where justice, equity and rule of law prevail. A nation, where everyone is free to pursue his or her legitimate ambition in any part of the country without fear of molestation or intimidation, “he said in a statement by his media aide, Paul Mumeh.

In his message, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, called on the Muslim Ummah to sustain the virtues of endurance, discipline, and love imbibed during the holy month of Ramadan.

He said: “I congratulate the Muslim Ummah on the successful completion of the Ramadan Fast. It is also my hope that the virtues imbibed in the holy month are sustained beyond the Ramadan and brought to bear in our personal lives and efforts at nation building.”
