7 prisoners regain freedom in Jigawa
Seven prisoners regained freedom yesterday, after the Chairman of Dutse Local Government Council in Jigawa State, Ibrahim Yakubu, paid their fine fees totalling the sum of N85, 000.
Yakubu, while speaking to Daily Trust on Sunday in Dutse, said the council arrived at the decision to secure their release after looking at their cases. He said the council discovered that the men were in prison for minor offences. The council chairman cautioned members of their respective families and the public against stigmatisation.
“The council secured the release of seven inmates from Dutse satellite prison today. The sum of N85,000 was paid. Most of them are drug addicts and they were discovered to have only committed minor offences hence, the intervention.
“Before we gave them transportation fares to go back to their localities, we counselled them against involving themselves in anything that will warrant re-arrest”, he said.
