Senator Lado set to join APC
Senator Basheer Garba Lado of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is set to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Daily Trust on Sunday gathered.
Confirming the development in Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Muhammad Mai Biredi, who is the Chairman, Senator Lado Political Consultation Committee, said the politician would dump the PDP for APC with 116,100 supporters. Mai Biredi added that 25 PDP women and youth political organisations have also decided to follow the senator to the APC.
He said the defection followed series of calls from politicians, friends and well-wishers from within and outside Kano.
Mai Biredi said, “some members of the National Assembly who worked with him when he was the senator representing Kano Central and others who know his political potentialities have been calling on him to join the APC, in order to improve the wellbeing of his constituents.
“When the pressure became too much on the senator, he formed a 12-man consultation committee which went round Kano-central and discussed the matter with constituents.
“We picked one person from each of the 15 local government areas in Kano-central. We also formed 10 chapters in the 15 local government areas and each chapter has 25 members. And in each ward, we registered 250 people, making it 2,500 people in each local government. This gave us a total number of 43,500 people in the district,” he said.
He said in Kano-south and north senatorial districts, the committee registered 200 people from each ward and came up with 54,000 people from the two senatorial districts who also decided to join APC together with Senator Lado.
“We are following Senator Lado to APC because we believe that he will continue with the good programmes he started when he was at the Senate.
“Take for instance, the Kundila flyover which the people of Kano State named after him in appreciation of the role he played, not only in bringing the project to the state but also in ensuring its completion. The on-going dualisation of the Kano-Katsina road is also his constituency project,” he said.
Lado, the candidate of the PDP could not return to the Senate, as he was defeated by the then Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the APC, during the 2015 elections.
