Group decries kidnapping, killing of nurses, midwives
The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has condemned what it called the abduction and killing of nurses and midwives, particularly in the North-East zone of the country by the Boko Haram group.
Briefing newsmen yesterday in Abuja, President of the association, Abdurafiu Adeniyi, said nurses and midwives were shocked by the brutal murder of a midwife, Saifura Hussaini and another health worker, Hauwa Mohammed Liman, who were both abducted in Rann, Borno State on March 1.
He said nurses are critical workers trained to save lives irrespective of political, religious or socio economic position, adding that it is unacceptable that they are made to pay the supreme price or sacrificed in the line of duty.
“Nurses and health workers are not part of the fight therefore they don’t deserve to be murdered on the platform of a theatre of war,” he said.
While calling on President Buhari to do everything possible to save the life of Alice Loksha , another nurse who is still in the custody of the insurgents, they called on the Federal Government to provide special protection for nurses, midwives and other health workers.
The nurses and midwives urged the federal government and the Borno State government to immortalise their colleagues who have died in the line of duty.
The association also called nurses and midwives in the country to wear black bands for three days as a mark of respect for their departed colleagues.
