Buhari to commission Lekki Deep seaport, other projects in Lagos

… Lagos govt orders truckers to vacate ‘Blue rail line’

Lagos –President Muhammadu Buhair will be visiting Lagos this week to commission projects, including the recentlyco­mpleted Lekki Deep Seaport in the Lekki area of the state.

Senior special assistant to the Lagos State governor on new media, Jubril Gawat, announced at the weekend that the president will visit the state from January 23 for the commission­ing of several “legacy projects”.

He listed the projects to include the Lekki deep seaport, the blue line rail project, running from Mile 2 (on the mainland) to Marina, Lagos Island; the 32-metric tons Lagos Rice Mill at Imota; and 18.75km Eleko to Epe T Junction express road.

Also included are the John Randle centre for Yoruba culture and history and the ground-breaking for the blue line rail phase 2 (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko).

Ahead of the visit, the Lagos State Gover nment warned all truckers’ unions to remove their trucks and vehicles that are parked on the Blue Rail Line corridor.

A statement by the Associatio­n of Maritime Truck Owners, AMATO, also warned its members to adhere to the directive of the government so as not to have their trucks and vehicles impounded.

AMATO’s National President, Remi Ogungbemi, said the roads must be vacated for ease of vehicular movement within and around the state during the president’s visit.

Parts of the statement read: “The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Transporta­tion hereby directs the removal of all trucks that are parked on Blue Rail Line Corridor, from Iganmu down to Okokomaiko, or have their trucks impounded by the State Government due to the planned four (4) days working visit to Lagos State by President Muhammadu Buhari for smooth commission­ing of the of the Lagos Blue Rail Line project.

“Blue Line Rail would be running on electric tracks with

Electric Motor Vehicle (EMV) hence, human activities including parking of trucks around the Blue Rail line Corridor is a threat to life and general safety. Hence, the need to keep off the Blue Rail Corridor.

“That Parking of trucks along the Blue Rail Corridor is a threat to the security of the rail infrastruc­ture.

“To this end, all truckers are hereby enjoined to remove their trucks from the Blue Rail Line Corridor from Iganmu to Okokomaiko to prevent their trucks from being towed, as to be forewarned is to be forearmed.”
