PDP flays AU’S naming of Buhari as anti-graft champion

Clergyman condemns killings by herdsmen, opposes cattle colonies

- Azimazi Momoh Jimoh, Abuja

THE Supreme Head, Cherubim & Seraphim Unification of Nigeria, His Most Eminence, Prophet Solomon Alao, has condemned the killing of innocent farmers by herdsmen in the country.

Dr. Alao who spoke yesterday in Lagos at a press conference to herald the church’s annual conference billed for Badagry, Lagos also condemned the idea of establishing cattle colonies across Nigeria, saying it is capable of creating more conflicts and set Nigerians against one another.

He also applauded President Muhammadu Buhari‘s fight against corruption and his efforts in diversifying the economy by encouraging local production of food. However, Alao charged the current administration to sustain the fight against corruption without nepotism and bias for any associate and party allies.

The C &S head advised Christians in Nigeria, especially his church members, to register and get their voters cards ready against 2019 elections.

The clergyman who admitted that politics may be dirty urged Christians to get involved and clean the system. He said: “If we don’t participate, there is no way we can clean the so -alled dirty politics. My church is willing to support any of the members that are willing to contest in 2019.”

Alao who also dispelled claims by some Christians that C &S is known for fetish and idolatry, said his church is a bible-believing church and that it stands for God. “We stand against any form of abominable sacrifices and we have commenced serious preaching against it and we are ready to discipline any of our leaders that portray the church in such manner,” he added.

Speaking also at the event, a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Director and erstwhile Secretary to the Lagos State Government, His Grace Olorunfunmi Basorun, urged Senate President Bukola Saraki and other National Assembly members to drop whatever issues they have with the Buhari and take decisions that could foster quick economic growth for the country.

Basorun said: “The National Assembly may have vowed not to confirm the appointment of the President’s nominees, but they should consider the plight of the commoners and approve some sensitive presidential nominees, some people whose duties are sensitive to the nation’s economic growth.

THE Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) yesterday described the war against corruption as currently carried out by President Muhammadu Buhari as a ruse.

The opposition party said the reported naming of President Buhari as African Union (AU) anticorruption champion was laughable, derisory and eminently qualified as Africa’s joke of the year. PDP said it was clear that leaders of the African Union were not well briefed on happenings in Nigeria, including the heavy sleazes going on around the Buhari presidency and was misled by the All Progressives Congress (Apc)-led Federal Government, which it said planned to use the naming as face-saving stunt for the administration.

In a statement yesterday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said: “It was embarrassing that the presidency, in its desperation to launder its irredeemably battered image, would resort to exporting its deceptive proclivities to the international arena.”

The party said the AU would not have honoured Buhari if it knew that what obtained in Nigeria was direct persecution of opposition under the guise of war against corruption, while officials of his government were swimming head deep in corruption under the overt protection of the presidency.

The statement reads in parts:

“As we speak, those receiving accolades as champions of anti corruption have not yet cleared the air on the leaked memo detailing underhand oil contracts to the tune of N9 trillion ($25billion dollars) at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources which are under President Buhari’s direct supervision as minister.

“They are yet to offer any explanation on series of reported fraud in the oil sector including allegation of the use of 18 unregistered companies to lift and divert N1.1trillion worth of crude oil in the last one year to service APC interests.”

The PDP said the Buhari government had provided cover for its corrupt officials, including former governors who were indicted of looting funds belonging to their states to sponsor their presidential election in 2015 as well as cronies openly indicted for other various sharp practices. “Perhaps AU leaders need to know that the presidency has virtually failed to do anything regarding the heinous diversion of N5 billion meant for the IDPS under the Presidential Initiative on the Northeast for which the Senate mounted a stiff investigation, only because officials of APC government was indicted,” it added.

The PDP further stated that the AU might also need to be shown the motion by Senator Baba Kaka Garba from Borno Central, who exposed how some individuals, known to have connections with the APC, fraudulently cornered N1.2 billion from the Federal Government under the guise of supplying items to IDPS, only for the money to be diverted for other purposes which are related to APC interests.

“Furthermore, the AU might need to know that the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who was openly indicted by the Senate for stealing funds meant for IDP activities, was only arrested after a public outcry but was quickly released with a pat on the wrist, while opposition members facing similar charges are being detained and persecuted with spurious charges in various courts.
